"Red Carpet" was the first song written for this project and lit the fuse for the idea of a whole album of film noir-inspired songs. It's based on one of the storylines in the 1997 film L.A. Confidential: a small town girl seeks Hollywood fame as an actress only to fall into the world's oldest profession...

Lyrics

Red Carpet

Simone was a girl from Eerie, PA
High heels and a dream she went to L.A.
Put those heels in the air,
drank some stiff alcohol
Had her first job in no time at all
She always said she would end up
on the red carpet
She always said her life would be
pictures and lights
Simone was a girl used to getting her way
Too much too soon weren’t words she could say
When she couldn’t seduce them
she’d blackmail the rest
With black and white photos
of her at her best
And they don’t give Oscars for what she could do
But you know if they did they’d have to forbid
The words that would be in her reviews…

Simone was the girl at the top of the heap
Out of her league and in way too deep
For the price of her silence
she’d shake Heaven down
Don’t cross the men who run Tinseltown
Don’t do it Simone, you don’t wanna mess around
out in Hollywood...
So when the police came to take her body away
From that bloody red carpet, one just had to say
“What a shame and a waste--
if you know what I mean--
Check her for prints get shots of the scene...”
She always said she would end up
on the red carpet
She always said her life would be
pictures and lights... She was right
